Alumni Awards - meet the judges

The judging panel for the Alumni Awards brings together a wealth of international expertise in education, entrepreneurship and national policy. Find out more about them and their work below.

  • Chief Executive and Secretary General, Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU)

    Joanna Newman joined the ACU in April 2017. It is the world's oldest international university network, with more than 500 members in over 50 countries. Joanna’s previous positions include Vice-Principal (International) at King’s College London, Director of the UK Higher Education International Unit (now Universities UK International) and Head of Higher Education at the British Library. In 2014, she was awarded an MBE in recognition of her work promoting British higher education internationally.

  • Interim Programme Director, V&A Dundee

    Caroline Grewar is Interim Programme Director at V&A Dundee, responsible for the strategic leadership of public programme across exhibitions, learning and education, and partnership with UNESCO (City of Design, Dundee). Having worked in the culture sector for almost 20 years, Caroline began her career at the British Institute of Florence, Italy. She then joined V&A South Kensington, working across capital projects, major exhibition delivery and international touring exhibitions.

  • Consultant, Moorhouse Consulting

    Amatey is a consultant at Moorhouse consulting, sitting in their HE and People and Change Teams. Prior to this, Amatey was Vice President Higher Education at the National Union of Students’ leading on the organisation’s international engagement, including tackling the BAME attainment gap. The later portfolio culminated in the #ClosingTheGap report, a collaboration between NUS and Universities UK. Amatey continues to support organisations in higher education and beyond on issues related to culture and culture change.

  • Chief Executive, UK Council for International Student Affairs (UKCISA)

    Anne Marie joined UKCISA in 2019 from the Association of Commonwealth Universities, where she was Director of Chevening, the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office’s flagship global scholarship scheme. Prior to that, Anne Marie has led on a range of educational programmes and projects promoting international mobility and intercultural exchange. Anne Marie spent several years in the language services industry managing high profile accounts with multinational engineering and pharmaceutical companies.

  • Director, Universities UK International (UUKi)

    Jamie was appointed Director of Universities UK International (UUKi) in November 2022. Prior to taking on this role, Jamie led Universities UK’s research and innovation policy programme (2014-2017) before becoming Assistant Director for Policy & Global Engagement at UUKi (2017-2022). Before joining Universities UK in 2010, Jamie was a research associate and ESRC research fellow at Manchester Metropolitan University’s Education and Social Research Institute.

  • Director Education, British Council

    Before joining the British Council Maddalaine was CEO of University Alliance, a mission group representing professional and technical universities. Prior to this she worked as a Civil Servant with stints in the Treasury, Number 10, the Home Office and the (then) Department for Business, Innovation & Skills. Maddalaine leads the British Council Global Education Strategy and Portfolio, working with colleagues around the world and with HMG, the Devolved Administrations and Higher Education Sector.

  • Consultant

    Sheila worked with the British Council for many years in scholarships, education, arts and leadership roles, across many countries from Americas to Asia, latterly in Europe. She is a Fellow of the Chartered Governance Institute UK & Ireland (CGIUKI), a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators (WCCSA), sits on the WCCSA Education Committee and is an Associate with Counterculture Partnerships LLP. She is trained in workplace mediation. Her current focus is mentoring and governance training.

  • Managing Director and founder, Gradcore

    Martin is the Managing Director and founder of Gradcore, a social enterprise focused on transforming graduate recruitment and employability, including running global graduate schemes for large employers, delivering employability performance improvement in universities, and chairing the UK and EU Graduate Employment Conferences. He is a Director of Institute for Student Employers, and co-chairs the Research and Policy committee, also advised the UK government and the EU on graduate recruitment.

    Martin Edmondson

The Alumni Awards recognise the achievements of international alumni of UK universities in four different award categories: Science and Sustainability, Culture and Creativity, Social Action, Business and Innovation. The four global winners are chosen from the 28 global finalists by our judging panel members above.
